Wall Flora: Hawthorn
Wall FloraĀ is a series of fiveĀ large scale prints taken from the pages of one of Denise Allan’s many sketch books. ItĀ documents the varied species of plants living in andĀ around a small piece ofĀ ancient dry stone wall.
As part of the artist’sĀ ongoing project which is focused on the 16th century house and grounds at Swathmoor Hall, close to her studioĀ on the Levens Estuary in Cumbria. The interior of the hall and the immediate surrounding landscape are the mainĀ focus of her exploration. These wild flowers could have taken root in the wall anytime fromĀ the early days of theĀ Hall (there’s mention of clover seed in the first account books), orĀ they could have blown in on the wind sometimeĀ over the past four-hundred years.Ā
